Tide / Potvynis-Atoslugis

Coming to the tropical island Itaparica I was taken by surrounding nature so vivid and powerful but at the same time so uncontrollable. It was not possible to sculpt, to overcome or change it. People were dependent on certain cycles and understanding and obeying that it was part of their life. By standing over 12 hours at the coast it was important to cover full cycle of tide and observe how it changes ways of movement and life around it. To be in the water it was matter of showing myself and a wish to be a part of the everyday life there. Even though I was an obvious stranger. The visible position of observer gave me the first possible relation to the community and “nature”.

With this work I examine environments – urban, social, industrial as well as natural environments. I am interested here in intersection of nature and human perception. In distance I address subjects matters the society tends to neglect or deny like environmental impacts.

The photo of me was taken every 5 minutes over the 12 hours and later combined in a stop motion video. It was created during Unesco/Aschberg Fellowship in 2013 at the Instituto Sacatar in Itaparica island, Brazil.
